Eduard Wiiralts (1898–1954) was known for his detailed and expressive animal portraits, which quickly gained popularity. In the spring of 1949, a Geneva publisher commissioned the artist to create a four-part copperplate engraving series. 'Okaapid' was the first work that Wiiralts dedicated himself to intensively. As a result, several drawings were made at the Paris Zoo, based on which the first prints were produced in the fall.

Ten consecutive days with the graceful okapis allowed the artist not only to precisely capture the figures and movements but also to observe the relationships within the animal family and to highlight the character of each member. Thus, the viewer finds in the work both the most reserved and the proudest member, the gentle life lover, and the obedient herd animal. The next piece in the same series was the majestic 'lion family'.

The work is illustrated in Mai Levin's monograph 'Eduard Wiiralt 1898-1954', page 279.
