Description:
"CHANTEZ MATINES, LE JOUR RENAÎT", Morning songs, a new day is born. (PLATE FROM "MISERERE") 1922. Signed and dated '1922 GR' in plate bottom left, aquatint and drypoint on paper. Image: 50,8 x 36,2cm, sheet: 61 x 46,4cm. On of 450 impressions signed and dated 1922 bottom left in the plate (there are no pencil-signed proofs) for the Miserere, one of the greatest print cycles of his time. Published by Vollard with his watermark 'Abroise Vollard' in the paper.

Chapron 82a IV/IV, Wofsey 136 ----- Vollard originally commissioned "Miserere et Guerre" to be about 100 images, but then backed off. Rouault worked the plates between 1916 and 1927. He recovered the plates from Vollard in 1947 and published "Miserere" with 58 plates and without Andre Suares' text. They were issued loose, in a cloth case. Many plates were worked as many as 15 times.
