Japan origin hand-painted hanging scroll by Shokei 松渓, original edition, hand signed, from the Taisho–Showa period (1930–1940), measuring 187 cm high by 49 cm wide with painting 130 cm by 32 cm, in fair condition and mounted on wood ends with brocade.
Description from the seller
A serene Taisho to early Showa period hand-painted landscape scroll by Shokei 松渓.
This work is executed in classic ink monochrome style, depicting a quiet mountain village. The rhythmical brushwork captures rocky cliffs, bare winter trees, distant rooftops, and a solitary fisherman gliding across still waters. The minimal color and soft shading evoke a poetic and meditative atmosphere.
The calligraphy at the upper section adds elegance and balance, making this a refined piece for collectors of Japanese literati landscapes, Zen-inspired art, or traditional Nihonga aesthetics.
Mounted with traditional brocade in warm gold tones, it is ready to display.
Condition
Please check all photos carefully.
– Age-related stains, foxing, and toning
– Minor creases, wrinkles, and small marks
– Some wear and fraying on the mounting edges
– No major tears in the artwork
Overall condition is fair for its age, retaining its classical charm and decorative value.

Dear Valued Buyers in Europe, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to you. Thanks to your continued support, I have been able to carry on my business for more than ten years. As of June 28, 2025, new regulations have taken full effect in the European Union concerning the importation of cultural property from outside the EU. Under these rules, when items are classified as “Cultural Property” or as antiques over 100 years old, and they are not accompanied by an Export Permit for Cultural Property, certain restrictions may apply under both Italian law and EU regulations. This Export Permit for Cultural Property has traditionally been required when exporting items such as swords, and obtaining it generally takes about one month. For this reason, when shipping hanging scrolls that are more than 100 years old, I will continue to use the same HS code as for those less than 100 years old. I sincerely ask for your kind understanding regarding this matter. With gratitude and respect,
