AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

A prestigious 17th-century engraving by Lucas Vorsterman I, the principal engraver in Rubens's workshop. It depicts Isabella d'Este (1474–1539), Marchioness of Mantua, based on the portrait painted by Titian in 1536 (Isabella in Black, Vienna) and on the copy made by Rubens, now lost. The elaborate drapery, the lateral scene with the three women, and the very fine hatching confirm the derivation from the original Flemish prints.

17th-century laid paper, clearly visible when held up to the light, with a fresh, museum-quality impression.

Excellent impression: clear line, uniform background, perfectly legible engraving.
• Copy trimmed at the top and bottom margins, with loss of the original engraved caption
Reverse with ancient watercourse, located in the lower right corner, stable and inactive.
• Small old restorations on the corners (paper reinforcements on the back), not visible on the front.
• Overall solid paper, with no tears through.

The engraved image is 100% intact.
Identical specimens are preserved at:
• National Gallery of Art, Washington
• Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam
• Royal Collection Trust, London
