Description from the seller
Paul Blanca (1958-2021) was a Dutch photographer, known for his confrontational and emotionally intense self-portraits. In the 1980s, he gained fame with powerful black-and-white photos about violence and vulnerability. Robert Mapplethorpe once called him his only rival.
His iconic self-portrait from 1986, in which he carved a crying Mickey Mouse into his back, is an important work in Dutch photography. Blanca’s photo series Par la Pluie des Femmes showcased genuine tears by evoking deep emotions.
His career was overshadowed by controversy, including alleged involvement in the 1995 attack on Rob Scholte. In 2022, the Fotomuseum Den Haag honored his work with a major exhibition. Blanca’s legacy remains an intense exploration of human suffering and emotion.
