Plate 23 from the series of 26 branches depicting hermits 'Oraculum Anachoreticum,' based on drawings by Maerten de Vos and engraved by the brothers Jan and Raphael Sadeler. It is a printed work from Venice, presented to Pope Clement VIII in 1600 when the Sadeler brothers traveled to Rome.
Sample with good margins, on heavy paper with a watermark, in very good condition, with a small tear along the left margin and a woodworm hole on the lower margin, both outside the printed area (see photo).
At the bottom left, 'Cum priv. Su. pont. et S. C. M.'; towards the center, 'Vos in'; and on the right, 'R. Sad fec'; below the image, a Latin inscription across two lines and two columns, 'Templum annis.../...munera miles obit'; and in the center, the series number '23'.
On the left, San Roberto is sitting on a tree trunk reading the Scriptures with a rosary in his hand, near a makeshift shelter; in the center, a church is being repaired by some figures, one on top of a ladder covering the roof with straw.
