Ludolf Bakhuizen, De Triomf van Neptunus en Amsterdam, an etching from 1701.
Description from the seller
Ludolf Bakhuizen (1631-1708)
You are from the series of ten sea views from 1701 (=Hollstein 1 through 10), called 'D'Y Stroom, and Sea Views,' ten famous and rare etchings by Holland's most important marine painter, created at the age of 71.
This etching has received two titles over time: 'The personification of Amsterdam crosses the seas' or 'The Triumph of Neptune and Amsterdam'. The background shows ships on the IJ in Amsterdam, with the shipyard of the VOC ('s Lands Zeemagazijn) visible.
Size up to the contour line is 19x25.8 cm, with wide margins of 1.4 to 2 cm. Printed on 18th-century paper. The etching is colored with light shades in watercolor. Such old light-colored coloring is more common in the etchings of Bakhuizen. It is unknown whether the etchings were sold by the publisher with or without coloring.
The item is in very good condition, see the photos. The front is completely fresh, with only a small stain in the extreme lower left margin. On the back, there is a small remnant of brown tape, otherwise completely fresh. The dark spot, visible with backlight (see the photo), is not visible on the paper. It may be an unevenness (thickening) of the paper. It is also unclear whether the light streak in the top left (see the close-up) is a defect of the paper.
