Etienne Delaune (1518 – 1583)
Two seated nymphs, surrounded by animals and floral garlands. Oval engraving from a series of six mythological scenes, listed in Dumesnil no. 374. Outer dimensions 7.2 x 5.5 cm. One very small thin spot is not visible on the front, only under backlight. Lightly mottled in the margins, see the photos.
On the back side, collector's stamp in black ink by George Ambrose Cardew (=Lugt 1134), also in pencil 'Delaune 1570'. At the top, two small adhesive residues.
Delaune worked as a goldsmith and engraver in Paris, Strasbourg, and Augsburg respectively.
Included in the Rijksprentenkabinet (Rijksmuseum) under Ornament Prints no. 555.5 (or 554.6).
