Description from the seller
Manuel Cargaleiro was born in 1927 in the Vila Velha de Ródão region, in the municipality of Castelo Branco, the city where he established the Manuel Cargaleiro Foundation in 1990 and, in 2005, the museum bearing his name.
In 1952, he held the first exhibition in Lisbon, and in 1954, he was awarded the National Ceramics Award. He was a ceramics teacher at the António Arroio School of Decorative Arts, still while he was a student at the Higher School of Fine Arts.
In 1957, he received a scholarship from the Italian Government that allowed him to visit Italy and study ceramics in Faenza, Rome, and Florence. The following year, he received a scholarship from the Gulbenkian Foundation to undertake an internship at the Faiencerie de Gien, under the guidance of Roger Bernard. It was around this time that he moved to France, rented an apartment in Paris with Lourdes Castro and René Bertholo, and befriended artists such as Vieira da Silva, Arpad Szenes, Hans Arp, and Sonia Dealunay.
His work encompasses drawing, painting, ceramics, engraving, and tapestry, having held numerous exhibitions in Portugal and abroad. His prominence led him to be decorated several times, most recently in 2023 with the Grand Cross of the Order of Camões, and to be honored in other countries; an example of this is the Museo Artistico Industriale di Ceramica Manuel Cargaleiro in Italy, which opened its doors in 2004.
He is one of the most acclaimed Portuguese artists, and we can affirm that Cargaleiro was the one who introduced Portuguese ceramics to the world.
Passed away on June 30, 2024.
