Il Luigi Rossini, Avanzi del Foro di Nerva [...], an etching (acquaforte) on heavy paper, signed on the plate, Italy, 19th century, 500 × 715 mm, in discrete condition.
Description from the seller
This is an incision depicting the remains of the Nerva Forum, also known as 'Le Colonnacce'.
The Forum of Nerva, or Transitional Forum, was the last of the Imperial Forums to be built, located between the Forum of Augustus and the Temple of Peace.
Its construction was begun by Domitian but inaugurated by Nerva in 97 AD.
The inscription shows the two remaining Corinthian columns, called 'Le Colonnacce'.
The entablature above the columns features a frieze depicting scenes of women's work and the myth of Arachne.
The temple dedicated to Minerva, the protectress goddess of Domitian, stood at the end of the square.
Etching on heavy paper without watermark, in black and white. Excellent inking and good preservation condition, with slight traces of foxing, browning, and visible binding marks. Insignificant water stain as shown in the photo. GUARANTEED shipping via courier; for insurance, declare any damages at the time of pickup. Provenance from a private collection.
Luigi Rossini (Ravenna, December 15, 1790 – Rome, April 22, 1857) was an Italian engraver, commonly regarded as the heir of Piranesi.
Luigi Rossini - Architect and engraver (Ravenna 1790 - Rome 1857). He studied in Bologna and, from 1810, in Rome. He assisted Canova with drawings for the temple of Possagno but soon dedicated himself to engraving, gaining wide renown with various series of landscapes, both Roman and from southern Italy, and ancient monuments (published between 1817 and 1839); many of these works are preserved in the National Calcography of Rome.
Matrices, prints, and drawings from the 'Fondo Rossini' are now stored at the Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica, where most of them are accessible online.
Roman Antiquities, or a collection of the most interesting views of ancient Rome (1819-1823), is a two-volume work comprising a total of 101 plates; in collaboration with Bartolomeo Pinelli, with whom he worked until his death in 1835, to 'animate' the architectural and archaeological views with figurines of common people.
