Description from the seller
Richard Smeets (1955) is a Dutch artist from Gennep. He received his education at the Academy of Visual Arts Maastricht. Smeets' work is thematically structured into three periods. In the first period, the woman is central. The second period is inspired by his travels to Malaysia and Indonesia, the homeland of his mother. In the third period, he focuses on the Dutch landscape.
This expressive work from 1987 showcases a dynamic and energetic composition where color and movement take center stage. Broad, powerful brushstrokes in bright yellow, red, and blue capture attention and create an intense, almost explosive image. Between the abstract forms, suggestive human figures and faces appear, built up from loose lines and transparent layers of paint. The whole exudes a sense of emotional tension and spontaneous gestures, typical of Smeets’ early period when women and the human body are central themes. Abstraction and figuration blend seamlessly, resulting in an image that evokes both physicality and inner experience.
Dimensions of work with frame: 102 x 82 cm
Dimensions of the work without frame: 90 x 69 cm
Viewing is, of course, possible. Additionally, we have our own in-house framing workshop, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary. Furthermore, we collaborate with restorers from the professional organization: 'Restauratoren Nederland'. If you wish to make use of this service, we would of course be happy to hear from you.
