The emission of silver ducats of the regional Utrecht variety in 1816 was a private initiative to promote international trade. Monetisation was done at the Utrecht Mint, as this was the only remaining mint after all other mints had been closed by the occupier at the time; it was subsequently maintained as national mint. 

When monetisation of trade coins was resumed after the liberation at the end of 1813, this was done on the base of a relevant decision (decision of 19 January 1814, Stb. 10) in the old regional variety, because there were no new laws yet. As a result, the silver ducats were made with the coat of arms of the province of Utrecht and its title in the circumscription at the obverse side because the mint of the province of Utrecht was the only one still in operation.
