Grape shears (1) - Silverplate

Description
Grape shears (1) - Silverplate
England - Second half 20th century

Silverplated grape shears with original box.

Grape shears to enhance your dinner party, to be used when the cheese and grapes are served
Use of Grape Shears dates back to early Victorian times, when it was considered unacceptable to touch food until it was on your plate. The clever design and use of a flange allowed the user to cut grapes off of a bunch on the cheese board, whilst the shears gripped the cut stalk allowing the diner to place the grapes on their plate, untouched by hand.
This shear is silver plated brass, and has decorated handles, each depicting a vine and a fox. It is 15cm (5 1/4 in) long, with a maximum width of 5.5 cm (2 1/8 in) at the Handle ends. Weight 82g.
