The first 2 parts were published in 1691 and the others were published in 1693.  

Bekker disputes the existence of sorcery, magic, possession by the devil and the devil himself.

In “Beright” after the title page (see photo), Bekker says that the first 2 parts (of 4) were published without permission by Hero Nauta in Leeuwarden! All 4 parts are personally signed by Bekker. 

Bekker stated that good or evil spirits had no influence on the lives of human beings. Also, seemingly paranormal events should not be linked to sorcery. Bekker was a theologian and preacher. The book resulted in a storm of protest in the Netherlands. 

This book was very influential in the fight against superstition. In the Netherlands, Bekker was taken to court by opponents and deposed from the ministry in 1692.
The books are complete with the only illustration on page 141 of part IV: a magic horn. Part 1 very sporadically contains a portrait of Bekker with an evil spirit next to him, but not in this copy. The parchment binding is in its original condition and solid. Overall a very good copy of this influential and rare book.
