Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland (Bad Langensalza, 12 August 1762 - Berlin, 25 August 1836) was a German physician, considered in Germany as the promulgator of pure holistic medicine according to the Hippocratic model. He used hydrotherapy and spa treatments and coined the term "macrobiotic" to indicate the ability to prolong human life, later taken up by Georges Ohsawa with another meaning. After the battle of Jena, he accompanied the royal family in their exile and returned to Berlin in 1809. He devoted himself with great energy to the reorganization of healthcare in Prussia and in 1810 he became professor of Special Pathology and Therapy at the new university. His work turned to the fight against infectious diseases; he founded a large number of charities for the sick and two welfare institutions for doctors and their families.
