In the 1970s the project "Bahn 2000" was launched, a new expansion programme for the Swiss railways (SBB). In 1985, an order was issued to develop a new series of locomotives which became known as Re 4/4 VI In 1987 twelve units were ordered, followed by a further 87 units in 1989 and another 20 units in 1992. The first locomotive which according to the new nomenclature of the SBB is referred to as series 460, was taken into service in 1992. The locomotives have 4 axles and 4 engines and are manufactured by the companies ABB and SLM. Each engine has a maximum power output of 1560 kW. The newest technologies were used in the construction and manufacture of this locomotive. The driver's cab, for instance, was not made of metal but of fibreglass-reinforced plastic (FRP). The entire front was then glued onto the rest of the locomotive.
