19th Century Oil Painting on Panel – After Friedrich Paul Thumann (1834–1908)
A beautiful 19th-century oil painting on panel, dated 1886, depicting a young figure in traditional clothing, leaning against a stone wall. The composition is atmospheric and intimate, executed in warm tones with a refined academic brushwork.
The painting is signed “A.C.S.” lower right and is presented in a fine, well-matching gilt frame, which complements the work perfectly.
Attribution
According to the professional assessment attached to the reverse, this painting is an authentic 19th-century hand-painted atelier work, created after a well-known composition by the German artist Friedrich Paul Thumann (1834–1908).
The composition, posture of the figure, clothing details and overall structure closely correspond with Thumann’s original work, which was widely admired and frequently copied by academically trained artists during the late 19th century.
The inscription “1886” fits perfectly within the period when Thumann’s work enjoyed great popularity and was often studied and copied by art students and professional painters.
