1998 Silver Kangaroo Obverse
The 1998 Silver Kangaroo is the final to hold Raphael Makflouf's Elizabeth II effigy, as Ian Rank-Broadley took the definitive mantle from 1999 onwards. The Late Queen, 'ELIZABETH II', is named alongside the inscription 'AUSTRALIA 1998'.
Reverse: 1998 Australian Kangaroo Coin
This 1998 hopping kangaroo is also Horst Hahne's final in the series due to his then-imminent retirement. Above Australia's national animal is this bullion coin's given denomination of 'ONE DOLLAR' with specification below: '1OUNCE FINE SILVER'.
Silver Kangaroo 1998 Specification
Each 1998 Kangaroo is made with a total of 31.103 grams of pure silver. This equals 1.00 troy ounce and is a result of the .999 silver used in striking the piece. The Royal Australian Mint struck the 1998 edition to the standard 40.00 millimetre diameter, with a frosted finish on the field of each face. Being, at its core, a bullion piece, an uncirculated bullion finish is present on the $1 coin.
Presentation Of 1998 Kangaroo Coin
This Royal Australian Mint series is infamous for its comparatively low mintage figures, which feed collector interest. As this is a one-year-only design, here is the only way to obtain Horst Hahne's final kangaroo sculpture before new artists took the mantle. Impending change is also found on the obverse, as the definitive bust of Elizabeth II changed the following year.
