Rare small-format edition of the Greek poems of the celebrated Dutch humanist Daniel Heinsius (1580–1655), one of the leading scholars of the Leiden Renaissance. This edition contains Heinsius’ Greek poetry together with Latin translations and additional poems.
The work was edited by Nicolaus Heinsius (Danielis filius), the author’s son, himself a distinguished classical scholar and diplomat. The book is dedicated to Cornelius van der Myle, an important patron of the arts and sciences.
Printed in Leiden (Lugdunum Batavorum) by Franciscus Heger, 1740. Leiden was one of Europe’s most important centres of humanist scholarship and printing.
The volume opens with an attractive engraved title page showing a seated scholar listening to a muse playing a lute. The text is printed in Latin and Greek, including several Greek poems in elegant type.
