Le Corbusier’s work in India is one of the most important chapters of his career and of 20th-century modern architecture.
After independence in 1947, India needed new infrastructure and symbolic modern cities. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru wanted a bold, forward-looking capital for the state of Punjab. In 1950, Le Corbusier was invited to design it.
His most famous work in India is the city of Chandigarh, designed in the early 1950s.
• A planned modern city based on a grid of
• Separation of traffic (cars vs. pedestrians)
• Emphasis on light, space, and order
Within Chandigarh, he designed monumental government buildings in the Capitol Complex, including:
• The Palace of Assembly
• The High Court of Punjab and Haryana
• The Secretariat Building
These structures are known for their raw concrete (béton brut) style, bold geometric forms, and dramatic use of shadow and sun control.
Other works in India
Le Corbusier also designed buildings in Ahmedabad, including:
• The Mill Owners’ Association Building
• The Villa Sarabhai
• The Shodhan House
These projects adapted his modernist ideas to India’s hot climate using:
• Deep overhangs (brise-soleil)
• Natural ventilation
• Thick walls and shaded spaces
Le Corbusier is considered one of the most important figures in architecture and design from the same era such as Jean Prouve, Enzo Mari, Ettore Sottsass, Charlotte Perriand, such as George Nelson, Eames, Hella Jongerius, Verner Panton, Frank Gehry, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Maarten Van Severen, Aalvar Aalto and Alexander Girard.
