Verso stamped: “Reproduction interdite sans autorisation et paiement des droits” with address Palais Royal – 229, Galerie Montpensier, Paris.
Annotated: “Coll. (collection)number Nadar 2094 – Corot”.
This portrait depicts Camille Corot, a central figure of the Barbizon School and a precursor to Impressionism. The image derives from an original photograph produced in the studio of Félix Nadar, renowned for his compelling portraits of the artistic and intellectual elite of 19th-century Paris.
The present print is a later, authorized studio reproduction, likely produced around the turn of the 20th century, when the Nadar studio commercially issued prints from its extensive archive of portrait negatives at its Palais Royal location. Such prints represent an important phase in the dissemination of photographic portraiture.
Condition: visible handling wear and surface abrasions, likely due to paperclip marks; minor staining and overall wear consistent with age.
