Chinese Export Carved Bone Chess / Puzzle Pieces – Red Stained Set
China, late 19th century, finely hand-carved and stained bone figural chess or puzzle pieces comprising an emperor figure, elephant with standard bearer, and mounted riders, each raised on intricately pierced puzzle-ball pedestal bases. Exceptionally decorative examples displaying strong Canton export influence with remarkable hand-work throughout.
The pieces exhibit deep relief carving, detailed robes and equestrian figures, and freely carved openwork spheres executed from single sections of bone in the traditional Chinese puzzle-ball manner. The rich oxblood/red staining gives the set a particularly striking display presence and separates them from the more commonly encountered natural bone examples.
A highly sculptural and visually engaging collection, ideal for collectors of Chinese export art, Grand Tour curiosities, or cabinet display objects.
Condition: age-related wear and natural shrinkage consistent with material and period. One mounted figure displaying an old repair/restoration to the horse leg/base area as photographed. Minor surface wear and natural variations throughout.
Measurements listed are of the larger piece.
