Large Antique English Repoussé Brass Fire Screen – Coaching Inn Scene with Horse & Carriage (c. 1890–1920)
We are delighted to offer for auction this exceptional antique brass fire screen, dating from the late Victorian to early Edwardian period (circa 1890–1920).
This striking piece is a fine example of the repoussé technique (embossed brass), widely produced in the brass foundries of Birmingham and Sheffield, England, during the late 19th century. The screen features a highly detailed, three-dimensional relief depicting a lively, rustic coaching inn scene. You can clearly see a horse-drawn carriage, charming figures, a domestic dog, and a traditional inn sign. The intricate scene is beautifully framed by a thick, ornate border featuring repeating stylized shells, leaves, and a rope-twist motif.
The front is made of embossed brass with a beautiful, naturally aged patina that emphasizes the depth of the relief. It is mounted on a solid, black-painted wooden backing (visible on the reverse), which provides sturdy weight and stability. It stands on two decorative, slightly splayed metal feet and features a practical, ornate brass carrying handle on top.
Measurements:
· Height (including handle): 60 cm / 23.6 inches*
· Width: 59.5 cm / 23.4 inches*
· Depth at feet: 19.5 cm / 7.7 inches*
· Panel thickness: 2 cm / -1 inch*
Condition:
The screen is in very good antique condition with a wonderful, deep patina. The brass shows no major dents or tears. The wooden back is solid and structurally sound. The handle and feet are perfectly attached. The wear is consistent with age, adding to its antique character.
Not just a practical item to protect furniture from heat and sparks, this is a true decorative antique that instantly adds a "Country House" or "Old English" atmosphere to your living room. It also makes a stunning wall display piece or a focal point for a cottage-style interior.
