Beschrijving van de verkoper

Late 16th-century pewter tavern measure – Low Countries or Northern France

A small antique pewter tavern measure or drinking vessel, probably made in the Low Countries or northern France during the late 16th century.

The vessel has a distinctive waisted body, a form associated with late-Renaissance domestic pewter. It was cast in several parts and subsequently finished on a lathe. Fine incised turning lines decorate the upper body and cylindrical foot.

The long, elegantly curved handle is fitted with a moulded thumb-rest above the rim. The jug is unmarked, as is regularly encountered on early utilitarian pewter.

The surface retains a deep grey-black patina, with scratches, small dents, oxidation and other signs of prolonged historical use. The handle of the jug was probably reattached.

An attractive and tactile example of early European domestic metalware.
