Portuguese Rococco Carved and Polychromed Wooden Panel – Mid 18th Century
A highly decorative Portuguese carved wooden panel, dating from the mid 18th century, retaining substantial traces of its original polychromy and gilding.
The panel is richly carved in high relief with scrolling acanthus forms, shell ornament and stylised foliate decoration, arranged within an architectural frame. The combination of deep carving, warm red ground, gilding and contrasting green details is characteristic of Portuguese ecclesiastical woodwork of the early Baroque period.
Most likely originally part of a larger church interior, retable, altar structure or architectural decorative ensemble. The rear shows the substantial original wooden construction and clear evidence of age and traditional workmanship.
The surviving surface is particularly attractive, with a beautifully aged and untouched appearance. The original gilding and polychromy show natural craquelure, rubbing and oxidation, giving the panel considerable decorative character.
