Published in 1993, Yellows 2.0 Tokyo 1993 is one of Japanese photographer Akira Gomi’s best-known works and a key volume in his Yellows series.
The book presents nude portraits of 100 Japanese women, photographed according to a consistent format. Rather than approaching the nude primarily through eroticism or conventional ideals of beauty, Gomi treats the project as a systematic visual record of the human body, emphasizing the differences in physique, proportion and individuality among the subjects. The later revised edition was explicitly described as a “physical record” of 100 Japanese women of the 20th century.
With its serial, almost typological approach, the project occupies a distinctive position between nude photography, portraiture and documentary observation. It is also an important example of Japanese photography from the early 1990s, a period in which representations of the nude were undergoing significant change in Japanese publishing.
