Beschrijving van de verkoper
An exquisite and highly decorative late 19th-century Neo-Renaissance style desk letter holder (letter rack). This heavy, finely cast piece is a beautiful example of European historicism, drawing inspiration from classical Renaissance motifs.
The letter holder features a dual-compartment design. The front and back panels are adorned with magnificent, openwork (pierced) scrolling foliage and tendrils, centered around a detailed classical grotesque mask (faun/mythological face). The ornate carrying handle at the top is beautifully sculpted with stylized twin dolphins and a central scallop shell motif. The entire structure rests on an elegant, wide base featuring four prominent shell-shaped scrolled feet, which double as a practical tray for pens or small desk accessories.
The piece is unbranded, which was common for fine decorative foundry work of this era, and showcases exceptional craftsmanship with crisp, detailed casting.
Styling & Period:
• Style: Neo-Renaissance / Historicism
• Estimated Period: Circa 1880
• Country of Origin: Continental Europe (Most likely France or Germany)
• Material: Cast Bronze / Heavy Brass
• Finish: Original aged patina with lovely golden highlights
Condition:
The item is in very good antique condition, showing beautiful signs of age and a rich, authentic patina. The structure is solid, sturdy, and completely intact with no missing parts or structural damage. Please refer to the photos to assess the detailed condition.
