Kyoko Ureshino - Okinawa : A Million Cries - 1968

Okinawa : A Million Cries Kyoko Ureshino Shin Nihon Publishing Co./1968/Japanese/258*183*5 Kyoko Ureshino, a freelance news photographer since the 1960s and one of the founding members of the Japan Realism Photo Group, visited Okinawa twice in 1965 and 1967 to report on the situation in Okinawa during the Security Treaty struggle in the 1960s. In 1965 and 1967, she visited Okinawa twice for interviews. At the time, he was not allowed to travel to Okinawa under the title of “photographer,” and was told that “bringing a camera into the country would not guarantee your life,” but he was determined to take photographs. A U.S. soldier just standing there in front of a dead body. Local police officers unable to do anything. Undeterred by the irrationality of the situation, I took these photos with tears in my eyes, overcoming the restraints of those around me. They were published through the hands of a photographer who returned to the mainland in secret, and became a catalyst for people on the mainland to seriously consider the reversion of Okinawa to Japan. This is a valuable record of Okinawa before the reversion to mainland Japan, recorded by a female news photographer who risked her life. (Included in The Japanese Photobook 1912-1990)
