Max Beckmann (1884–1950).

"Bildnis des verwundeten Schwagers Martin Tube" ["Andenken an einen gefallenen Freund"], 1914.

Original lithograph.

Signed and dated (19)14 in the plate.

Published in the weekly art magazine "Kriegszeit" (Wartime), founded by Paul Cassirer at the beginning of the First World War. The typographic inscription below the portrait commemorates his brother-in-law and friend, Captain Martin Tube, who fell on the Eastern Front (Iwangorod) on October 11, 1914.
51 avant-garde artists contributed 265 lithographs, many of them idealized depictions of a soldier's daily life and caricatures of the enemy. All proceeds went to an organization supporting impoverished artists. In 1916, Cassirer replaced "Kriegszeit" with the comparatively pacifist newspaper "Der Bildermann."

Catalogue raisonné: Söhn 134.

Lithograph in good condition, as seen in the images. Wooden frame and glass with minor imperfections. Please see photographs.

Passe-partout window: 37 x 29 cm.
Frame size: 49.5 x 42 cm.
