Antique English walking cane – Birmingham sterling silver collar – 1918 – 91 cm The cane is made from a naturally gnarled hardwood shaft with a beautifully formed crook handle, retaining the irregular knots, grain and contours of the original wood. The rich brown surface has developed an attractive deep patina through age and use. It is fitted with a broad sterling silver collar, fully hallmarked for Birmingham, 1918. The collar has a distinctive hand-finished construction with a visible laced or stitched-style seam to the reverse, adding considerably to the individual character of the piece. The cane is in good antique condition with wear consistent with its age and use. The wood retains its natural knots, fissures and irregularities, together with areas of surface wear and loss to the finish, particularly around the end of the handle and lower section. The silver collar shows expected surface scratches, small marks and age-related wear. The shaft remains intact and structurally sound.
