Bengala - .925 prata - Alça Denby, c. 1900

Gentleman’s walking cane fitted with a 925 sterling silver Derby-type handle, mounted on a polished dense hardwood shaft. The handle has a classic Derby / crook form with a gently curved grip and flattened terminal, offering both comfort in hand and practical support. The silver handle is clearly stamped “925 STERLING”. This marking became commonly used from the late 19th century onwards, particularly in the United States, and supports a dating to the circa 1890–1910 period, suggesting manufacture for or intended for the American market. The silver surface shows natural wear and patina consistent with age, with light scratches and a small dent, visible upon close inspection. The dent does not affect the structural integrity or usability of the handle. The form is restrained and functional, characteristic of late Victorian to early Edwardian gentleman’s canes. The shaft is made of a dense, dark-toned hardwood with attractive natural grain. It is straight, well balanced and solid. The cane retains its original ferrule, showing wear consistent with long-term use. Overall, this is a well-made and honest example of a turn-of-the-century gentleman’s walking cane, valued for its confirmed sterling silver handle, classic Derby form and good overall proportions. Good condition, consistent with age. The sterling silver handle shows surface wear, light scratches and a small dent, consistent with age and use. The hardwood shaft is straight and stable, with minor surface wear. The cane retains its original ferrule, showing wear from use. No structural damage observed.
