Descrição fornecida pelo vendedor

Antique Dutch silver knottekistje (traditional proposal box), made of .833 silver, Netherlands, 19th century.

Knottekistjes originate from an old Frisian tradition related to marriage proposals. In earlier centuries a groom would offer coins to his future bride as a symbol of engagement. These coins were tied in a cloth with a special knot (“knotte”). Later, this cloth was replaced by a small silver box, known as a knottekistje.

These boxes were often richly decorated with symbolic scenes representing love, faith, and marriage, making them meaningful keepsakes associated with engagement traditions.

This example features beautifully executed repoussé relief scenes with figures in a pastoral setting, surrounded by decorative foliage.

The box is marked with several Dutch silver hallmarks, including:
• the lion passant for .833 silver
• the Minerva head (Dutch assay mark)
• a date letter
• the maker’s mark “MC”

Condition: good antique condition with normal signs of age and use. The hinge works properly and the lid closes well. Interior shows natural patina consistent with age.

A charming and historically interesting example of 19th-century Dutch silver craftsmanship.

The object will be carefully packed and shipped insured.
