Fine Victorian walking cane with solid silver handle – London 1893 – maker ER – ebony shaft – richly repoussé decorated
An elegant and highly decorative Victorian walking cane, featuring a solid silver handle hallmarked in London in 1893 and bearing the lion passant, confirming the sterling silver standard.
The handle is richly ornamented in repoussé with flowing foliate scrolls of exceptional depth and detail, demonstrating the refined craftsmanship characteristic of late Victorian silverwork. The domed top is engraved with a monogram, adding a personal historical touch.
The piece carries the maker’s mark “ER”, as struck to the silver (see photographs). The deep black ebony shaft provides a striking contrast to the bright silver, enhancing the cane’s elegant and timeless appearance.
Originally both a functional accessory and a symbol of status, such canes were an essential element of a gentleman’s attire in the late 19th century. Now over 130 years old, this is a genuine Victorian antique with strong presence and collectable appeal.
In very good antique condition, with an attractive patina. The silver handle shows light age-related wear and surface marks consistent with use. The ebony shaft shows light wear and surface marks. The original ferrule is present and shows light wear from use. Overall structurally sound and well preserved.
