Forty Days in the Desert, On the Track of the Israelites; Or, A Journey from Cairo By Wady Feiran, To Mount Sinai and Petra A famous mid-19th-century travelogue written and illustrated by William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854). The book documents a journey to the Levant, from Cairo through Wady Feiran to Mount Sinai and Petra. From this same journey he gathered material for the very successful Nile Boat, or Glimpses of the Land of Egypt'. With 45 illustrations, including engraved title-page, folding map, and over 20 steel engravings. Published by Arthur Hall & Co., London, 1860s. Publishers’ original red cloth, with gilt decorations and gilt vignette to upper cover. Titles to spines gilt. All page edges gilt Book Dimensions: 25 x 17 cm and Number of Pages: 206. Condition External covers are faded and with some black marks- possibly ceiling wax to rare cover. Some wear to corners, and edges, and minor rubbings to head and foot of spine. Internally; in fair condition. No names or inscription. First blank page appears removed. Light foxing on the margin of some pages, and damp marks to flyleaf and on some pages. The folding map is complete. Slight split to inner hinges but page are still tightly held at gutters. All illustrations are present (Please see pictures).
