Anel sinete - 22 K Ouro amarelo - Chester
Edwardian signet ring in 22 karat gold, 7.96 g, made by John Gammage of Chester in 1896.
The ring was resized at some point making it larger, a size W. The band is 6mm wide.
I contacted the family of the maker of the ring and received this back from them.
“Hi Esther,
Many thanks for your email. I can confirm that your ring was made by John Gammage, my wife's G-G-Greatgrandfather, hallmarked in Chester in 1898, five years before the firm of LW&G was founded in 1903. From my family history point of view it's great to see something still in circulation in such good condition and with a clear hallmark. I regret that I have no records to provide any further information (we would need a warehouse far larger than our current workshop to hold 120+ years of paperwork), but John Gammage was a versatile jeweller who made many different products and I have seen rings like this before.
I would guess that the shield may have been designed to be engraved with part of a heraldic crest, or just with initials, something we currently specialise in, but that it was never engraved.
I regularly get emails like this from all around the world, for a long running family business like LW&G it is gratifying to be contacted with queries like this, your email is much appreciated.
Best wishes”
