Napoleon III. - Histoire de Jules César Tome I-II - 1865
This historical set contains the first two volumes of the monumental work Histoire de Jules César (History of Julius Caesar). The first volume (Tome Premier) was published in Paris in 1865, and the second volume (Tome Deuxième), subtitled Guerre des Gaules (Galské války / Gallic Wars), was released in 1866. Both books were printed by the publishing house Henri Plon (Imprimeur-Éditeur). This extensive academic and biographical project was authored by the French Emperor Napoleon III, who wrote the work to demonstrate that extraordinary historical figures and leaders (such as Julius Caesar or Napoleon Bonaparte) fulfill a historical mission and act in the interest of human progress. The second volume focuses in detail on the military campaigns in Gaul, strategy, and the Roman army.
The books were published in the original French language and serve as an example of French historiography and official imperial publishing during the Second Empire period. These specific volumes were bound for the British market by the bookbinding workshop Palmer & Howe, located at 3 Bond Street in Manchester, as evidenced by the preserved contemporary binder's ticket on the marbled endpaper. The books bear the printed ownership mark of a previous owner (Edmond Burkard) on the title pages. This set represents a source for researchers in Roman history, military strategy, and 19th-century French political history.
Condition: the half-leather binding shows rubbed edges and spines on both volumes. The second volume features a slightly faded texture color near the upper edge of the front cover. Internally, both volumes are in good condition; the pages are clean, with only minor thumbing/handling marks in places consistent with age and regular use. The complete condition of the publication is captured in detail in the attached photographs, which form an integral part of the description.
The books will be packed very carefully and shipped promptly.
