Vitral - 1850-1900 - Um pintor antigo incomum
An unusual antique painted-glass panel, probably of Belgian origin, dating to around 1890–1910.
The oval composition depicts a bearded elderly man seated beside an open hearth, with a sleeping dog at his feet and shelves of vessels in the background. The warm yellow-gold accents contrast with the finely drawn brown and grey interior. Along the lower edge appears the Dutch proverb “Oost, West, Thuis Best”, meaning “East or West, home is best”.
The panel bears two inscriptions: “Smaelen & Jonau” and “Alph. Gineur pinx.” The latter uses the traditional abbreviation pinx. from pinxit, meaning “painted by”. Historical research has identified a Brussels painter-decorator named Smaelen active around 1870 and a Jean Jonau recorded as a glazier in Brussels in 1910. These are promising archival leads, although a direct connection between those individuals and the signatures on this panel has not yet been documented.
The work is therefore cautiously attributed to a Belgian, possibly Brussels-based, workshop. The precise identity of Alph. Gineur and the exact date remain unconfirmed.
The panel appears to be a reverse-glass painting, mounted in a shaped metal frame with a suspension chain. Its distinctive figurative subject, traditional Dutch motto and surviving inscriptions make it an appealing piece of historic European decorative art.
Dimensions: approximately 30 × 20 cm.
Condition: visible age-related wear and surface deterioration to the reverse layer, with patina and wear to the metal frame. No major crack is apparent in the supplied photographs; the panel has not been professionally examined out of its frame. Please study all photographs carefully as part of the condition assessment.
