Anicius Manlius Torquatus Severinus Boethius (Rome, 475/477 – Pavia, 524/526) was a Roman philosopher and senator : his works had a profound influence on medieval Christian philosophy, so much so that some consider him one of the founders or precursors of Scholasticism, particularly in relation to the famous dispute over universals. He was the principal collaborator of King Theodoric, holding the office of magister officiorum (September 522 – August 523). In the climate of cultural revival that peace made possible during the reign of the Gothic king, Boethius conceived the ambitious project of translating the works of Plato and Aristotle into Latin. PROVENANCE: François Martinengo, bishop of Nice. He was a minor friar of the observance and advisor and grand chaplain of Duke Charles Emmanuel I of Savoy. He was a famous orator and reader in theology. He was appointed bishop of Nice in 1600 and died in 1620. During his episcopate the Jesuits and the Poor Clares settled in Nice.  RENOUARD, Josse Badius, II, p. 209, n. 19; BAUDRIER, XI, p. 510-511; about the printers: BAUDRIER, XI, pp. 461-513
