Handlare’s dokumentskåp (帳場箪笥) - Hinoki (cypress) trä, Keyaki (Zelkova) trä, Sugi (ceder) trä, Järn (gjut) - Japan - Tidiga Meiji-perioden (andra halvan av 1800-talet)
A fantastic wooden chôba’dansu 帳場箪笥 (merchant’s document cabinet) fitted with striking iron hardware and incorporating a concealed secret compartment. Fully restored, cleaned, and waxed.
The drawer fronts are crafted from richly figured keyaki 欅 (zelkova) wood, while the frame is made of indigenous hinoki 檜 (cypress) and the panels of sugi 杉 (cedar). The cabinet is finished in a dark reddish-brown Shunkei-style lacquer, allowing the natural wood grain to remain clearly visible.
The interior is configured with ten drawers of varying sizes and a pair of sliding doors. The sliding doors are fitted with a sliding lock and ornate oval thumb grips embossed with a stylised auspicious kanji. The drawers feature large circular iron lock plates, flanked by warabite-shaped bail handles mounted on oblong escutcheons. When the rightmost drawer of the three adjacent drawers is removed, a hidden compartment is revealed at the rear.
Period: Japan – Early Meiji period (Second half 19th century).
Dimensions:
Height 113.7 cm , Width 85 cm, Depth 42.5 cm
The cabinet is in very good restored condition, with only minimal traces consistent with age. No keys are included. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
