Byôbu (folding screen) - Lackerat trä, Gold leaf, Mulberry paper, Silk - Japan - Tidiga Meiji-perioden (andra halvan av 1800-talet)
A stunning medium-sized six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a Kanô School-style painting depicting an idyllic nature landscape.
A slender, curving Japanese apricot tree 梅 (ume) stands gracefully beside a lush pink peony 牡丹 (botan) in full bloom, while several Japanese tits 四十雀 (shijûkara) scurry around or perch on a branch. The gentle hillside is dotted with flowers, including white narcissus 水仙 (suisen), white chrysanthemums 菊 (kiku), and vivid red asters 野菊 (nogiku), nestled among soft blades of pampas grass 薄 (susuki). The tranquil scene is enveloped by drifting clouds of gold-leaf specks, evoking a serene and timeless atmosphere.
Executed in colour and ink on mulberry paper with gold-leaf accents. The composition is bordered by two silk brocade bands: a slender brown inner trim and a broader green-blue outer one. And set within a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective copper hardware.
Period: Japan – Early Meiji period (Second half 19th century)
Dimensions:
Total width 268.8 cm (2 × 46 cm, 4 × 44.2 cm); Height 136.6 cm
