A hanging scroll painting 掛軸 (kakejiku) depicting a poetess by Namba Chiyo 千代女 (1703–1775). Showcasing a portrait of a poetess dressed in vibrant voluminous Heian-style attire. She wears a rich red kimono with intricate brocade detailing, overlaid with a soft blue outer robe adorned with a delicate floral motif. Seated gracefully on the ground, she gently raises an open sensu 扇子 (folding fan) to partially conceal her face, as she prepares to compose a poem beneath the soft glow of the moon. Ink, watercolours, and gold paint on paper, mounted as a hanging scroll within a silk brocade border and fitted with jikusaki 軸先 (roller ends). Inscriptions: Signed Chiyo Joshi 千代女子 with seal Chiyo Joshi 千代女子 to the lower right. Period: Japan – 18th century (Edo period) Dimensions: Image 91.5 × 37 cm; Total (including mounting) 176.5 × 40 cm In a very good condition with minor wear, small stains, and light soiling. The mounting shows traces of age, including wear and small tears along the edges, and a restoration at the top and along sides. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference. Namba Chiyo 千代女 (1703–1775), also known as Chiyo-ni 千代尼, was a celebrated haiku poet and Buddhist nun of the Edo period, widely regarded as one of the greatest female poets in Japanese literary history. Her work embodies a refined sensitivity to nature and spiritual depth, often interwoven with delicate imagery and emotional subtlety. In addition to her poetry, Chiyo-ni was a skilled painter whose works express the same grace found in her verse. Complete with double wooden tomobako 供箱 (storage box). When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity. Important notice: Please note that the ivory roller ends (jikusaki) will be removed before shipping or handover, and are therefore not included in this offer. Due to the holidays, shipping and handling times may be longer. Thank you for your understanding.
