Norsk Filigransfabrikk - E. Nordgren, Oslo - Teförvaring/låda - .830 silver - c.1895 år, 463 g

This striking lat XIXth century Norwegian solid silver tea caddy was produced by Norsk Filigransfabrikk of Oslo, a prominent silversmithing firm founded in 1889 by Clement Berg and Samuel Holm. The company specialized in high-quality filigree work, plique-à-jour enamel jewelry, and decorative holloware, becoming one of the leading producers in Norway around the turn of the century. After initial operations until 1906, the firm was revived in 1910 under merchant Albert Scharning and continued until 1931. The caddy is crafted in the classic bombé (bulbous) form with deep gadrooning to the body and lower rim, raised on four cast claw-and-ball feet. The hinged lid showcases expert repoussé and chased decoration, featuring elaborate floral scrolls, foliage, and blooming motifs encircling a central vacant cartouche (suitable for later engraving). A boldly cast handle in the shape of a winged mythical serpent or dragon crowns the lid, lending a dramatic, fantastical touch that subtly references Norse motifs while aligning with the firm's ornate revival styles. A functional front lock with key escutcheon highlights its practical origin: secure storage for loose tea, a prized commodity requiring protection in period households. The interior forms a single plain compartment, consistent with Norwegian designs for holding blended teas. Hallmarks include the firm's mark associated with Norsk Filigransfabrikk (typically a rising lion or related devices in documented pieces), The presence of "E NORDGREN" may indicate a artisan, manager, or variant punch used within the factory during its production phases. In very good antique condition, with sharp detailing to the chasing, original warm patina, and minimal wear, this tea caddy exemplifies the skilled craftsmanship and decorative sophistication of Norsk Filigransfabrikk's holloware. Pieces from this maker are increasingly sought after by collectors of Scandinavian silver, particularly for their blend of functionality and artistic embellishment. Key working perfect
