Red Parakeet and Blue Bird Perched on Azalea Tree with Appraised Box - Horie Yusei 堀江有聲 (1802-1873) - Japan - Sena Edoperioden (Utan reservationspris)

This scroll comes with an appraisal box by great-grandchild 'Horie Wasei' 堀江和聲 (1887-1954) 堀江有聲 Horie Yusei (1802-1873) Born in Unnan, Shimane. His childhood name was Zensaburo Toyonobu, and in his youth he was surnamed Unpou and Seihaku. From an early age he loved to paint and studied under Yamamoto Tanen in Kyoto. In his twenties he travelled around the country and painted many works at Mori family in Hagi, and in 1852 he became an official painter under Matsudaira Naoaki, the ninth lord of the Hirose domain. with signature 'Yusei' 有聲 This charming hanging scroll depicts a vivid scene of a red parakeet and two blue birds perched among blooming azalea branches, painted by Horie Yusei (1802–1873), a noted painter active from the late Edo to early Meiji period and associated with the Maruyama–Shijō school tradition. Yusei is known for his refined brushwork, graceful compositions, and the naturalistic warmth of his bird-and-flower paintings, all of which are beautifully expressed in this work. The central red parakeet is rendered with exquisite attention to detail, its feathers layered in luminous tones of orange, red, and blue. Below, a pair of lively blue birds interact playfully among delicate blossoms. The tree trunk, leaves, and flowers are depicted with a harmonious balance of precision and softness, reflecting the classical Japanese kachōga aesthetic and its celebration of seasonal beauty. This scroll is accompanied by an appraisal box that bears an inscription by the artist’s great-grandchild, Horie Wasei (1887–1954). Written in Taishō 10 (1921), the inscription affirms that the painting is a genuine work by Horie Yusei. This family-origin appraisal adds meaningful provenance and historical value to the piece. The mounting shows age-related wear, including creases, stains, and areas of deterioration, which are consistent with an antique scroll. The painting surface itself remains well preserved, maintaining the clarity and fine coloration for which Yusei’s works are appreciated. Overall, this is an elegant and culturally significant example of Japanese bird-and-flower painting, combining artistic refinement with documented lineage and an authenticated box. It will make a graceful and valuable addition to any collection of traditional Japanese art. 堀江有聲 Horie Yusei (1802-1873) Japanese antique art kakejiku kakemono wall hanging scroll / Red Parakeet and Blue Bird Perched on Azalea Tree with Appraised Box Whole dimensions: 23.3" W x 71.8" H / 59.4cm x 182.5cm Inside dimensions: 16.4" W x 41.6" H / 41.9cm x 105.9cm Material: Silk Technique: Handpainted Roller ends: Bone (DAMAGE) Weight: 750g including Appraised Box Condition Antique items have originally crease, stain, damage, and more.
