Kutch silver beaker with dense chased foliate decoration, Ahmedabad, c. 1900 - Kopp - .900 silver

Indian silver beaker with dense hand-chased foliate decoration, Ahmedabad, c. 1900–1915 This finely worked silver beaker is a representative example of late-19th to early-20th century Kutch / Western Indian silversmithing, defined by its densely scrolling floral ornament executed in high-relief repoussé with textured amati (stippled) background. The front reserves a small shield-shaped cartouche with a period monogram, surrounded by deeply modelled foliage and flowerheads, while the handle is also elaborately chased to match. The form and decoration suggest production in Gujarat, likely in the Bhuj / Kutch workshops that became internationally known for this distinctive style. By the late Victorian period, such pieces were widely supplied to the European and Anglo-Indian market — particularly to British officers, colonial administrators, and affluent travellers during the era of the British Raj. Kutch silver was frequently purchased as high-quality personal tableware, presentation gifts, or mementos of service in India, prized for the richness of the chasing and the weight of silver compared with European equivalents. The proportions and gently tapering cylindrical shape are characteristic of beakers made for domestic and ceremonial drinking, possibly originally intended for water, sherbet, or spirits. Its scale suggests it may have been owned by a gentleman in colonial service, a refined object that blends Indian craftsmanship with European functional form. 109.62 g / 3.52 t oz 7 cm tall 8 cm wide with handle 6 cm diameter at base 5 cm diameter on top A bright and attractive beaker with clear decoration and a good surface. There are two small dents to the base — one slightly more visible, the other very minor — together with typical light surface marks and gentle rubbing to some raised areas. The interior shows expected age-related wear. No splits, repairs, or structural issues. Overall, the piece remains in very good antique condition, ready for display or use. Please take time to view all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description and provide an accurate representation of the item’s details and condition. The shipping cost includes professional packaging, full insurance, and tracked delivery, ensuring the parcel reaches you safely and securely.
