Soma ishô’dansu 衣装箪笥 (klädskåp) - Trä, Metal, järn, Keyaki (zelkova) trä, Hinoki (cypress) trä - Japan - Meiji-perioden (1868-1912)

A rare and very large Soma wooden ishô’dansu 衣装箪笥 (cabinet of drawers) in two sections. Fully restored, cleaned, and waxed. The drawer faces are crafted from precious keyaki 欅 (Zelkova – Japanese “oak”), while the exterior is made from Hinoki (Japanese cypress). The entire piece is finished in a shunkei-style reddish-brown lacquer, allowing the natural wood grain to remain visible. The upper section contains two spacious full-width drawers.The lower section holds two drawers of varying size and a hinged door opening to two further small drawers. The drawers are fitted with iron warabite-shaped bail handles, incised with a foliage motif. They flank large circular iron lock plates decorated with a chiselled and hammered design of a diamond flower framed by scrolling foliage and finished with a copper rim. These cabinets originate from the Soma region, a coastal area of Fukushima Prefecture. Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868–1912) Dimensions: Height 118 cm (T 59.1 cm, B 58.7 cm), Width 121.4 cm, Depth 45.1 cm In very good restored condition, with minimal traces consistent with age.
