Pair of Altar Pricket Candlesticks
Cast and turned brass
Europe, ca. 1600
Height: approx. 28.5 cm
A finely balanced pair of brass altar pricket candlesticks, each with a baluster-shaped shaft and broad drip pan, raised on a moulded circular base supported by three knopped feet. The upper pricket spike was used to secure the candle. The undersides retain traces of turning and oxidation typical of early brass craftsmanship.
Such candlesticks were commonly used on church altars or in domestic chapels. Their solid yet elegant form reflects the transition from the Renaissance to the early Baroque, combining functional design with devotional refinement.
Overall in good condition, ball feet of later date
