Monkey design - Mola - Kuna - Panama (Utan reservationspris)
Older Kuna mola with a central design of a monkey. Mola means "clothing" or "covering" in the Kuna language of Panama, referring to a pre-Columbian custom of body decoration with painted patterns, similar to those used for blouses today. Molas are made by women using the reverse appliqué technique, in which pieces of fabric are sewn over each other and sections are cut away to reveal the underlying layers and create a design. The mola measures 41.5 x 53.5 cm and is attached to a piece of (jute?) textile for strength. There is minor damage to the monkey's face and slight discoloration due to age. The mola has always been stored in a dark and UV-free environment, so the discoloration dates from the previous owner or before.
