Delicate Maternity Figure from Import Collection - Skulptur - Asante - Elfenbenskusten
Beautiful Asante Maternity with delicate features.
It comes from the collection of Jean Louis Rinsoz, a Swiss businessman and diplomat who gathered an important collection of objects from the Ivory Coast where he worked (see pictures). It was part of an exhibition in 1969.
The statue was acquired at an auction from Hammer Auktion in Switzerland. It was estimated at 2000-4000chf and comes with a certificate of authenticity and provenience.
The inclusion of a European chair is a status symbol indicating the importance of the depicted figure. The figures’ hair double as antelope horns and have traces of blue paint. According to Jean David (Hammer Auktion): "the form of antelope horns [...] symbolize fertility, strength, and protection within Asante culture. The inclusion of antelope features often represents the blending of human and animal attributes to convey a deeper spiritual significance. It underscores the nurturing role of maternity while invoking the wisdom and grace associated with the antelope."
