SImon Groth - 1893 - Sejdel - 397,4 g - .800 silver - Danmark

This exceptional Danish silver tankard from 1893 represents the high craftsmanship of late 19th-century Copenhagen silversmithing during the era of refined historicist revival styles. Crafted in 800 silver (marked "800" for the Danish standard of 800/1000 purity), the tankard stands 16 cm in height and weighs a substantial 397.4 grams. It features a classic baluster form raised on three elegant ball feet, with a hinged domed cover surmounted by a foliate thumbpiece and a robust, gracefully curved handle. The body and cover are richly decorated in high repoussé and chased technique with dense, flowing floral and acanthus foliage in the popular neo-Rococo taste of the period. Scrolling leaves, blossoms, and sinuous stems cover the surfaces in deep relief, creating a luxurious, tactile play of light and shadow across the hammered ground. The interior is fully gilt (gold-washed), providing a warm, luminous contrast to the bright exterior silver and protecting against tarnish from use. The hallmarks are clear and perfectly legible: The national three-tower mark of Copenhagen (adopted as Denmark's standard town mark in 1893), with the date code "93" for 1893. The assayer's mark "SG" for Simon Groth, the respected Copenhagen assay master active 1863–1904. The "800" standard mark. This combination confirms Copenhagen origin, precise dating to 1893, and official assay under Groth's tenure—hallmarks that align with Denmark's reformed national marking system introduced that year. The tankard is in excellent preserved condition, with sharp chasing detail, intact gilding to the interior, supple hinge action, and no significant dents, repairs, or wear to the relief work. The piece displays a fine, even patina consistent with age and careful stewardship. A handsome and impressive example of Danish silver from the 1890s, ideal for advanced collections of Scandinavian silver, neo-Rococo revival objects, or presentation drinking vessels. Weight and presence make it suitable for both display and occasional ceremonial use.
