Her expression is neither wistful nor troubled — it occupies that rare, more difficult emotional territory: a mind in motion behind a composed exterior. She is simply present, and looking. What arrests the eye immediately is the interplay of materials. The background is a field of gold leaf, applied with deliberate irregularity so that the surface breathes — catching light differently across its textured plane, shifting from warm amber to pale ochre depending on the angle of view. Against this luminous ground, the figure is rendered with the restrained precision characteristic of the finest contemporary Nihonga. Her long black hair falls in a single unbroken curtain from crown to shoulder and beyond, the ink brushwork bold and confident, the hair's weight and density made entirely convincing. A single sweep of vivid cobalt blue marks her clothing — the one note of unambiguous color in the composition, and its placement is exact: it anchors the figure without competing with the face or the gold. The artist's use of the Nihonga tradition is neither reverential nor rebellious. It is fluent. The classical materials — mineral pigments, gold leaf, animal-glue binder — are deployed in the service of a subject and a mood that feel entirely contemporary: a young person at a window, on the threshold between the interior world and whatever lies outside. The title Window functions on multiple levels. It refers, presumably, to the unseen aperture toward which the figure gazes.
